UNCERTAIN GERMANIC TRIBES, Pseudo-Imperial coinage. Mid to late 5th century. Solidus (Gold, 21 mm, 4.37 g, 6 h), Rhine valley region. Imitating an issue of Valentinian III from Ravenna. D N PLA VALENTI-NIANVS P F AVG Laurel-and-rosette-diademed, draped and cuirassed bust of Valentinian III to right. Rev. VICTORI-A AVGGG / R - V / COMOB Valentinian III standing facing, holding long cross in his right hand and Victory on globe in his left and placing his right foot on human-headed serpent below. G. Depeyrot: Les solidi gaulois de Valentinian III, in: SNR 65 (1986), group d, 1. For prototype, cf. Depeyrot 17/1 and RIC 2010. Rare. A lovely example with slightly crude but legible legends. Light scratch on the obverse, otherwise, nearly extremely fine.
